In a recent interview with Andrew Ross Sorkin (DealBook), Apple CEO Tim Cook recently announced that he personally owns Bitcoin and Ethereum.

“I do. I think it is reasonable to own it as a part of a diversified portfolio” claimed Cook but also mentioned that this was not financial advice.

Cook also revealed that he had been interested in cryptocurrency for quite some time and considers it interesting.

When asked if Apple had any plans to incorporate cryptocurrency as payment, Cook mentioned that Apple is currently not planning to accept cryptocurrency as a means of tender for any of their products. However, Cook did mention that Apple was looking at other means with cryptocurrency. When asked what those “other” things were, Cook chuckled, smiled and mentioned that he had nothing to announce in the immediate term.

We do know however, that Apple is definitely interested in the cryptocurrency space as there was a job posting for a business development manager position for “alternative payments” a couple of months ago. To me, “alternative payments” sounds like cryptocurrency.

I think that in the future, we will see Apple accept cryptocurrency as a form of payment for their products and apps. I also think that we will see a crypto wallet built into the iPhone or we may even see an Apple coin. Whatever the future holds, I am bullish on cryptocurrency and the innovation that it brings to the world.

Key Notes:

  • Apple CEO Tim Cook says he personally owns Bitcoin and Ethereum.

  • Cook said he has been interested in cryptocurrency for a while and has done research on it.

  • While there are no immediate plans to accept cryptocurrency as payment, Apple is looking into other means for cryptocurrency.
